Diploma Course for International Arbitrators

The SCC Arbitration Institute (SCC) and the Swedish Arbitration Association (SAA) are pleased to offer a comprehensive diploma course designed for experienced international arbitrators seeking to enhance their expertise in Swedish arbitration practice and the SCC Rules. This intensive programme comprises eight interactive modules delivered by leading Swedish arbitration specialists, focusing on key procedural aspects and recent developments in Swedish arbitration law. The course will also offer comprehensive insights into the SCC Rules, along with practical tips and considerations for arbitrators handling SCC cases.

Participants will develop practical skills in conducting arbitral proceedings in compliance with Swedish law and best practices, covering essential topics including the regulatory framework, arbitration agreement validity, the SCC Rules, arbitrator mandate, and procedural management. The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on exercises in hearing conduct, award drafting, and post-award procedures. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a SCC/SAA course diploma.

Course programme

The course consists of modules covering evergreen and timely topics such as the arbitration agreement, appointment and challenge of arbitrators, sanctions and drafting of the arbitral award. Each module includes a lecture and a practical exercise or a plenary discussion. The course will start with an introductory dinner at the venue and will end with a diploma ceremony.

Eligibility and application process

The course is designed for 30 experienced arbitration practitioners with substantial international arbitration experience. Applicants must demonstrate at least ten years of dispute resolution practice and hold admission to the bar in one or more jurisdictions outside Sweden. Prior experience as an arbitrator is expected.

Applications are assessed through a competitive selection process. Candidates must submit a comprehensive CV and a personal statement demonstrating their motivation for participation and relevant experience. Applications will be collected through a form which can be accessed by clicking the button below.

The application period for the June 2028 course will open in September 2027.

Once the deadline has passed, selected participants will be notified and asked to provide their invoicing details.

Format, venue, and fee

The course consists of eight comprehensive modules, featuring expert lectures followed by practical exercises and plenary discussions. The programme commences with an introductory dinner and concludes with a diploma ceremony.

Venue: Thoresta Gård, a distinguished historical manor situated 50 kilometres from Stockholm, offering an inspiring setting on the shores of Lake Mälaren.

Fee: SEK 35,000 (excl. VAT), which includes all tuition, single-room accommodation at Thoresta Gård, full board from the opening dinner through to the closing lunch, and networking activities.
