SCC Arbitration Rules to be featured in the 36th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot
The SCC Arbitration Institute is proud to announce that the SCC Arbitration Rules have been selected as the procedural framework for the 36th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot ("Vis Moot"), to be held in 2029. This marks a significant return to one of the world's most celebrated stages for the next generation of arbitration practitioners.
The world’s largest arbitration competition for law students
The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is the world’s largest international commercial arbitration competition for law students. Each year, more than 6,000 participants representing teams from over 80 countries gather to test their skills in written and oral advocacy across a complex, cross-border commercial dispute. Since its founding in 1993, the Vis Moot has served as a defining experience for generations of lawyers, offering an unparalleled environment in which to develop practical expertise in international arbitration.
A return to the SCC Arbitration Rules after 15 years
This edition holds particular significance: it will be the first time since 2009 that the SCC Arbitration Rules serve as the procedural framework for the Vis Moot. For the SCC, this is a deeply welcomed return.
Competing teams will engage in depth with the SCC Arbitration Rules, examining their structure, flexibility, and application to complex cross-border disputes. The SCC Arbitration Rules are renowned for their efficiency, neutrality, and procedural balance, and reflect the SCC’s longstanding commitment to transparency and innovation in dispute resolution. As noted by the Moot’s organisers, the Rules offer a modern and balanced procedural framework widely used in complex international disputes.
Investing in the future of arbitration
Supporting the next generation of arbitration practitioners is central to SCC’s mission. The Vis Moot represents the kind of initiative that SCC is proud to stand behind; one that combines academic excellence with practical relevance, and that contributes meaningfully to the global development of international arbitration expertise.
“We are delighted to return to the Vis Moot as Rules Sponsor after 15 years,” said Caroline Falconer, Secretary General of the SCC Arbitration Institute. “The Moot is where many of tomorrow’s arbitration practitioners take their very first steps in the field. Introducing the SCC Arbitration Rules to thousands of talented students from over 80 countries is an opportunity we embrace wholeheartedly and a reminder of why supporting the next generation of legal talent sits at the heart of what we do.“
