Statistics 2022
Every spring, we compile the previous year's case statistics. These highlight how many cases we have administered, the type of contracts in dispute and when the cases were decided.
Caseload 2010-2022
In 2022, the SCC registered 143 new cases, 47 % of which were international disputes and 53 % were Swedish disputes. For a case to be considered Swedish, all parties must be Swedish.
Disputed amount
The amount represents the total amount in dispute in SCC cases commenced in 2022. It includes cases under the SCC Rules, SCC Expedited Rules, SCC Rules on Emergency Arbitrators and cases administered under the UNCITRAL Rules. Only cases where information on disputed value was available to the SCC are included in the amount below.

Applicable Rules
Of the 143 cases registered in 2022, 91% were administered under the SCC Arbitration Rules or the SCC Expedited Arbitration Rules.
Type of agreement
The disputes brought to the SCC in 2022 stemmed from many different types of agreements. Most common were disputes arising out of delivery agreements, business acquisitions and service agreements.

Applicable law
The most frequent applicable law in SCC cases commenced in 2022 was Swedish law.
Number of arbitrators
In 60% of the arbitations commenced under the SCC Arbitration Rules in 2022, the arbitral tribunal consisted of three arbitrators.
In 31% of the arbitrations under the SCC Arbitration Rules, the arbitral tribunal consisted of a sole arbitrator.

In 2022, three challenges were made in relation to arbitrators in SCC arbitrations.
Appointed arbitrators
The parties appointed a majority of the arbitrators in arbitrations commenced in 2022.
Appointed arbitrators in SCC arbitrations
Of the arbitrators appointed by the SCC, the parties, and the co-arbitrators in arbitrations registered in 2022, 34% were women and 66 % were men.
Arbitrators appointed by the SCC
The SCC appointed 50 arbitrators in 2022, of which 27 were women and 23 were men. Compared to 2021, the SCC increased the proportion of women appointed as arbitrators by 5 percentage points, from 49% to 54%.
Arbitrators were also appointed by the parties and the already appointed arbitrators.
Arbitrators appointed by the parties
A majority of the 187 arbitrators appointed in SCC arbitrations registered in 2022 were appointed by the parties, of which 27% were women and 73% were men.
Arbitrators appointed by co-arbitrators
Only ten of the 187 arbitrators appointed in SCC arbitrations registered in 2022 were appointed by the co-arbitrators, and of those, 30% were women and 70% were men.
Emergency arbitrator
If a decision on interim measures is needed to provisionally ensure a party’s claim before the commencement of an arbitration, the party may apply to the SCC for the appointment of an emergency arbitrator.
Two emergency arbitrator proceedings were commenced at the SCC in 2022. In both cases, an emergency arbitrator was appointed within 24 hours. The decisions were rendered on average within 8 days. Both resulted in the request for interim relief being denied.
