Statistics 2024

SCC's statistics highlight how many cases we have administered, the type of contracts in dispute, how time efficient our procedures are, and which arbitrators are being appointed, among other things.

Caseload 2010-2024

In 2024, the SCC registered 204 new cases. Of these, 105 (51%) were international disputes and 99 (49%) were Swedish disputes (involving only Swedish parties). Of the cases that were administered under the SCC Arbitration Rules, 65% were international and 35% were Swedish.

Applicable rules

Of the 2024 caseload, 53% (107 cases) were arbitrations registered under the SCC Arbitration Rules, and 35% (71 cases) were registered under the SCC Rules for Expedited Arbitrations. The SCC also registered 13 ad hoc services, 5 cases under the SCC Mediation Rules, 4 Emergency Arbitrator proceedings, as well as one SCC Express.

Average amount in dispute

The average amount in dispute for disputes administered under the SCC Arbitration Rules amounted to just over EUR 100 million and the average amount in dispute under the SCC Expedited Arbitration Rules was approx. EUR 672 000. 

Industries

The disputes invoked in 2024 concerned a wide range of contract types. The most common were disputes concerning retail and consumer products, financial services, and real estate and construction. 

Contract type

The disputes brought to the SCC in 2024 originated from many different types of contracts. Most common were disputes arising out of business acquisitions, delivery and transportation agreements, and purchase agreements.

In 2024, 488 parties from 40 different countries resolved their disputes at the SCC Arbitration Institute. Please note that there are two or more parties in each case.

Language of the arbitration

The cases registered 2024 used English, Swedish, Russian, and French as the language of the proceedings.

Appointed arbitrators in 2024

The following statistics are based on arbitrators being appointed in 2024. This means that cases initiated before 2024, but where the appointment of arbitrators was decided upon during 2024, such appointment has been included.

Appointed arbitrators under the different SCC Rules

In 2024, a total of 211 arbitrators were appointed. Of these, 160 arbitrators (76%) were appointed under the SCC Arbitration Rules, 46 arbitrators (22%) under the SCC Expedited Rules, 4 emergency arbitrators (2%), and one arbitrator (0.5%) in an ad hoc case.

Arbitrators appointed under the SCC Arbitration Rules

In 2024, a total of 211 arbitrators were appointed. Of these, 160 arbitrators (76%) were appointed under the SCC Arbitration Rules. Under the SCC Arbitration Rules, 44 (21%) were appointed as chairperson, 47 (22%) as claimant’s arbitrator, 44 (21%) as respondent’s arbitrator, and 25 (12%) as sole arbitrator.

The SCC appointed 211 arbitrators from 26 countries on three continents in 2024.

Number of arbitrators appointed to tribunals with 3 arbitrators and 1 arbitrator

In 2024, arbitrators were appointed in a total of 69 cases under the SCC Arbitration Rules. In 44 disputes (64%), the tribunal consisted of three arbitrators. In 25 disputes (36%), the tribunal consisted of a sole arbitrator.

Appointments made by the parties, the SCC, and the co-arbitrators

In 2024, the parties appointed 119 arbitrators (56%) while the SCC appointed 83 arbitrators (39%). The co-arbitrators appointed only 9 arbitrators (4%).

Challenge to arbitrator

In 2024, 12 challenges to arbitrators were registered. In 4 of the cases, the arbitrator chose to resign after the party requested his/her resignation.

In 8 of the cases, decisions were taken by the SCC Board, of which 6 applications were rejected, 1 application was sustained and 1 application was dismissed since it was received after the final arbitral award had been rendered.

Women were appointed in 40% of all appointments of arbitrators in SCC arbitrations in 2024, while men were appointed in 60% of these appointments.

The SCC board appointed 83 arbitrators in 2024. In 57% of these appointments, women were appointed, while in 43% of cases, men were appointed.

The parties appointed 119 arbitrators in 2024. In 28% of cases, women were appointed, while in 72% of cases, men were appointed.

The co-arbitrators appointed 9 arbitrators in 2024. In 56% of cases, women were appointed, while in 44% of cases, men were appointed.

Emergency arbitrators

If a decision on interim measures is needed to provisionally ensure a party’s claim before the commencement of an arbitration, the party may apply to the SCC for the appointment of an emergency arbitrator. ​

Four interim proceedings were requested from the SCC in 2024. In all cases, the interim arbitrator was appointed within 24 hours. Decisions were rendered on average after 7 days from referral to the emergency arbitrator.

Of these four disputes, the request was dismissed in all four cases.
