SCC Arbitration Institute

One day course: Everything you need to know about arbitration

In this one-day course, we will explore how the arbitration process works from start to finish. The aim is to provide you with both a theoretical and practical foundation for representing your or your client’s interests in arbitration proceedings.

We will review the most important differences between court proceedings and arbitration and explain the different rules and forms of arbitration. The day will cover how to invoke arbitration, the statement of defence, and other correspondence during the proceedings, as well as evidentiary issues and the final hearing. We will also offer a behind-the-scenes look at the SCC Arbitration Institute and the arbitral tribunal, illustrating what the practical work can entail there.

Additionally, we will highlight the considerations counsel should make at the outset – particularly when appointing the arbitrator and the chairman of the tribunal – and discuss the most important issues to agree or decide at the start of the proceedings. We will review relevant practice from challenge proceedings and discuss strategic considerations.

By the end of the course, you should feel well-prepared for how arbitration works and understand the key issues at stake.
